Lake Country is not a town or a community; rather, it is a group of charming towns in the northwest corner of Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The area is appropriately named, as these lovely towns and villages are nestled amidst over 140 beautiful lakes! Lake Country towns include Lac La Belle, Pewaukee, Mukwonago, Hartland, Delafield, Nashotah, Chenequa, Oconomowoc, Summit, Merton, and Okauchee Lake. The towns are centrally located, less than an hour from either Madison to the west or Milwaukee to the east. The residential neighborhoods are lovely, with tree-lined streets, large homes, and immaculate yards, and the schools are among the best in Wisconsin. 

Lake Country’s towns are small, quaint, family-friendly, and welcoming. The area is home to many parks, beaches, and trails.  Residents are minutes from picturesque places where they can enjoy the beautiful outdoors, go fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, biking, and paddleboarding. The area also features many fantastic golf courses. Each community has its own “downtown” business district, and most feature lovely small shops and locally curated boutiques.

The best thing about living in Lake Country is the opportunities for outdoor sports and days spent on the lake. The area has a relaxed vibe, and residents support their local business districts. The schools are ranked among the top in the state, and the area has a strong sense of community. This has made living in Lake Country an impressive experience.

The towns in Lake Country offer residents an incredible variety of fantastic restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and taverns. Artisan 179 is a waterfront venue with a stunning view. Artisan is a farm-to-table restaurant that makes everything from scratch. Zesti has a warm and rustic dining space and offers a menu of authentic Italian and Mediterranean specialties. The beautiful outdoor patio at Weissgerber's Golden Mast Inn overlooks Okauchee Lake, and the indoor dining room is sophisticated and elegant. The menu features seafood, steaks, and chops. 

Entertainment venues in Lake Country are cozy dives and local establishments where residents like to gather. Foolery’s Liquid Therapy is the perfect setting for casual bar food and cocktails in a spirited waterfront setting. Stolley’s Hogg Alley is the quintessential “neighborhood bar.” Stolley’s is where folks gather to have a beer, share some laughs, and enjoy live music. For a more laid-back cultural experience, the Lake Country Players is a great place to take in a live performance.

The small towns in Lake Country are known for their historic business districts, small locally curated boutiques, and unique shopping venues. The shops are perfect for finding one-of-a-kind decorative items, chic fashions, artwork, and lovely antique items. Some well-known and frequented venues in Lake Country are the Lake Country Boutique, Brown Street Emporium Artisan Mall, Fox Lake Antique Mall, and the Mayhouse Collection.

Things to Do

Lake Country is the perfect place for family fun and outdoor activities. The area offers an almost unending list of fantastic parks and green spaces where residents can enjoy hiking, biking, nature walks, fishing, boating, sports, and picnics. During the winter, the lakes and parks are transformed into a snowy paradise where residents go ice fishing, sledding, skating, snowmobiling, and sledding.  

The towns also offer many events and festivals, like Summerfeste, Waukesha’s Friday Night Live, Local Farmer’s Markets, Brookfield Kids Fest, and summer Beer Gardens. Lake Country is also where you’ll find a Friday Night Fish Fry in almost every town. 

Enjoy live music at the Tosa Night’s Concert Series, The Falls Sunset Concert Series, Nixon Park Concert Series, and Bands at the Beach. Other exciting local events include the Hartland Hometown Celebration Fireworks, Oconomowoc 4th of July Parade, 4th of July Fireworks events, and so much more!
